What is Monkeypox virus?

WHAT IS MONKEYPOX?

Monkeypox is caused by the Monkey pox virus (virus family Poxviridae and genus Orthopoxvirus) and represents a rare disease which can affect also humans. Recently, new cases in several countries (e.g. UK, Portugal, USA, Germany, etc.) worldwide were observed [2, 3].

HOW DOES MONKEYPOX SPREAD?

As a characteristic of a zoonotic disease, humans get infected mainly through close contact with infected animals. The virus can be transmitted via blood, tissue, excretions or skin lesions of infected animals (predominantly rodents). Contact with the meat of infected animals can also be the source of infections in humans. Transmission from human to human can occur via close contact with infected persons (contact with body fluids/sexual transmission/respiratory secretions) [1, 2].

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?

Generally, a monkeypox infection in humans goes along with relatively mild symptoms. This includes fever, headache, muscle aches, backache and swollen lymph nodes in the first days after infection followed by formation of a characteristic rash [1, 2].

ARE SCHULKE PRODUCTS EFFECTIVE AGAINST MONKEYPOX?

The Monkeypox virus is an enveloped DNA virus. Schulke products like mikrozid surface wipes, mikrozid jumbo wipes and octenisan wash lotion are tested against EN 14476. Henceforth, they are proven to be effective against enveloped viruses.
